I Googled that word - spurious - and it says "bastardly: born out of wedlock". It also says "anterior feet of some of the Lepidoptera, in which these members are destitute of nails, and not suitable for walking." That does not include grasshoppers not locusts, but is butterflies and moths. Perhaps the gentleman was of that order and it was his antennae that were across his pate. My pate has been empty for a long while.
